What a Pre-Purchase Inspection Covers — and Why the Demonstration Flight Matters

By the time an aircraft is being inspected, a price has usually been discussed. The pre-purchase inspection is where that price meets the evidence — and where a buyer finds out whether the asset in front of them matches the asset described in the records.

First, what a PPI is not

A pre-purchase inspection is a commercial exercise agreed between a buyer and a seller. It is not a regulatory requirement and it is not an approval. Its scope, its depth and who pays for what are matters of contract, and they vary considerably from one transaction to the next.

That is precisely why the scope needs to be written down before anyone starts. An inspection that was never defined tends to become a dispute about what should have been found.

The three layers of a PPI

Most inspections work across three layers, each answering a different question about the same aircraft.

  • Records review — what the aircraft's documented history says about it: airworthiness directives and service bulletins, life-limited parts and their back-to-birth traceability, repairs and modifications, and whether the paperwork is complete and consistent
  • Physical inspection — what the airframe itself shows: structural survey, corrosion, the condition of the interior and cabin, and borescope inspection of the engines
  • The flight — what the aircraft does when it is asked to work

Why the flight is not optional in practice

Records and a ground inspection are both static views. They describe an aircraft at rest, and they are very good at revealing what has been done to it. What they cannot show is how the airframe, engines, systems and automation behave together, under load, at altitude.

A demonstration flight closes that gap. Engine parameters can be observed at power rather than inferred from trend data. Pressurisation, air conditioning and hydraulics are seen doing their job. Autoflight and navigation systems are exercised in the environment they are meant to work in. Handling can be assessed rather than assumed.

For a buyer, a lessor or a financier, this is the step that confirms performance matches the technical records before funds move. For a seller, it is the opportunity to demonstrate a well-maintained asset with confidence rather than argue for it on paper.

Who does what

In a well-run inspection the technical and operational sides are distinct but coordinated. The technical inspection — records, survey, borescope and any findings arising — sits with an appropriately approved organisation. The flight element sits with flight operations: crew, planning, permits, fuel and handling, positioning the aircraft where the inspection needs it to be. Spectrum Aviation Services provides that side.

The benefit of running both within one group is not speed for its own sake. It is that findings on the ground and findings in the air end up in the same report, assessed by people who have spoken to each other — rather than in two documents that a buyer is left to reconcile.

Practical points worth agreeing in advance

  • The written scope of the inspection, and which standard or checklist it follows
  • Who bears the cost of the flight, the fuel, and any positioning
  • What happens if a finding emerges in the air — who rectifies it, and at whose cost
  • Whether the aircraft is being inspected in its delivery configuration or as currently operated
  • How findings are recorded, and what constitutes a discrepancy for the purposes of the sale agreement
  • Whether a maintenance check flight is also required, which is a different exercise with a different purpose
