Maintenance Check Flights (MCF): What Gets Tested, and Why It Is Not an Ordinary Flight
A maintenance check flight is not a transit, and it is not a test drive. It is a flight with a defined technical purpose: to establish that an aircraft and its systems behave as they should after maintenance, before anyone puts it back to work.
What an MCF is
A maintenance check flight — also referred to as a functional check flight or a post-maintenance check flight — is flown to confirm that an aircraft's systems perform as intended following maintenance activity. It follows a defined test schedule derived from the aircraft's maintenance documentation, and it is flown deliberately, with the crew working through that schedule rather than simply flying a route.
The distinction from a normal flight is not administrative. During an MCF, the crew may deliberately exercise systems in configurations that would never be sought in service, and the aircraft may be operated closer to the edges of its normal envelope than on a line flight.
The EASA framework: Level A and Level B
Operational requirements for maintenance check flights were introduced into the European rules by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1384, amending the Air Operations Regulation and the continuing airworthiness rules. The regulation obliges the operator to determine which of two levels applies before the flight.
A Level A maintenance check flight is one where the use of abnormal or emergency procedures is expected, or where the flight is required to prove the functioning of a backup system or other safety device. A Level B maintenance check flight is any maintenance check flight that is not Level A. The classification drives crew requirements, procedures and preparation — which is why it is settled before the aircraft moves, not during the walk-round.
The rules also require that the checklist for the flight is reviewed and updated as necessary before each flight, taking account of the procedures planned for that particular check, and that any task specialist on board receives a safety briefing beforehand.
Who carries the responsibility
This is the part most worth being precise about. A maintenance check flight is carried out under the control and responsibility of the aircraft operator. The operator determines the level, holds the procedures, and is accountable for the conduct of the flight.
A provider such as Spectrum Aviation Services supports that operation — supplying crew prepared for the specific profile, and the operational wrap-around of planning, permits, fuel and handling around it. What a provider cannot do is assume the operator's regulatory responsibility, and any arrangement that appears to suggest otherwise should be looked at carefully by both parties.
When an MCF is typically required
- After heavy maintenance or a base check
- Following an engine change or a major component replacement
- After work on flight controls, or following rigging adjustment
- On return to service after a period of storage or prolonged parking
- Where the maintenance programme, the type design holder's documentation or the competent authority calls for one
- Before a delivery, redelivery or lease return, where the parties have agreed it
What actually gets tested
The specifics come from the test schedule for that aircraft and that work package, so no two are identical. Broadly, an MCF looks at whether systems that were disturbed by the maintenance now function correctly in flight, and whether the aircraft's handling and performance are what the documentation says they should be.
The results matter as much as the flight. Findings are recorded and passed to the maintenance organisation so anything discovered airborne can be closed properly on the ground — rather than being remembered as a comment in a handover.
Why crew preparation is the whole game
A line crew handed a test card on the morning of the flight is not a prepared crew. An MCF asks pilots to fly a sequence they do not fly in service, to observe and record precisely, and to be ready for the aircraft to behave unexpectedly — that is, after all, the point of checking.
Crew for these flights should be briefed against the specific schedule in advance, clear on which level applies and why, and clear on what will end the test and return the aircraft to a normal configuration.
